What Would You Write If You Needed Help?

Have you ever had someone try to sell you something so hard that you immediately decided that there was no way you were going to buy it... even if you were mildly interested in it... whatever the "it" was? 

I have experienced it and have seen it firsthand time and time again. 

And there is a consistent fatal flaw that seems to pop up over and over again as well and in a minute I will tell you what that is. 

I see the same flaw on those signs that people hold up at the intersections where they are asking for money. 

You know the ones that I am talking about. 

They say things like... 

Homeless 

Cannot find a job 

God Bless You for your help! 

Or something to that effect... same problem even on signs like this... can you guess what the fatal flaw is? 

The pushy salesman and the sign have one thing in common... it is all about them. 

The pushy salesman tells you all about the "widget" that he is selling... how good it is... how fast it is... how much easier it will make your life and has not even invested the time to determine if you in fact need the widget or if you have other needs. 

And the sign? 

Same thing... all it talks about is the person holding the sign and it is tough to get others to empathize with you in 10 words or less... not impossible though. 

Now just for fun and to get your brain cells firing... let us say that you are hungry... you have a marker and a cardboard sign and a busy street corner to stand on. 

In ten words or less what would you write on the sign to get those passers by to hand over their hard earned cash to you? 

Take a couple of minutes and try to think up something right now. 

Okay so let us get into it. 

I will preface what I am about to say with this... the idea that is to get what you want is by putting the focus on someone else. 

Now you obviously want money... so what you write on your sign is critical in accomplishing this... in my experience whenever I see people holding signs like this they are usually focused on the person holding the sign. 

The problem with this is that most passers by may not feel anything toward you because 

1... They are blind to you and your sign due to overexposure.
 
2... You have not created the feeling in them that generates empathy or a desire to help you. 

Let us face it if you are standing on a corner with a little sign... how much time do you have to get someones attention so that they can take action? 

The answer is... very little. 

So again not only do you have to grab their attention and you have very little time to do it in... by the way there is not a lot of difference between holding out a sign like this and advertising in general... let us face it... we are all bombarded by messages every day that want us to take some sort of action and the vast majority of these we ignore. 

So what do you write? 

You write something to get their attention... you make it about them and you include some emotion if you can to appeal to their higher giving nature. 

So something as simple as... 

“What if you were hungry?” 

Might work or any variations on this like... 

“What if your children were hungry?” 

“What if your family was hungry?” 

“What if your family was counting on you?” 

Can you understand the emphasis is on them and you want their brains to go to a place where they have to put themselves in your position to possibly feel what you are feeling. 

Now is this a guarantee that they will drop what they are doing and rush over to you with their wallet out? 

Of course not... yet using these ideas will put you in the best possible position to get what you need. 

As a matter of fact this very sentence was used by the author of a book called “Neuromarketing” where the author offered to write such a sign for someone asking for money... while the author went into a restaurant to eat dinner... the man with the new message on his sign made almost 6 times more than what he would have with his old sign.

Which is not too bad considering you are only changing a few words around to make 6x the profit. 

Now if you were making your own sign and you used the word you or your on your sign... then you are definitely in the right ballpark. 

Remember one of the best ways to persuade people is to have them feel what it would be like to be in that position.

In other words making use of Empathy!
