Using Neuroscience To Relax And Make You More Creative And Productive

By Ange Fonce

Neuroscientific research on the brain has gathered evidence that working fewer hours does not only make you healthier... it helps makes you more"smarter"... and more "productive" too.
Have you heard the sayings...

"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy."

"All work and no play makes for a dull day."

In the first saying... many people interpret this as a comment on Jacks personality... that he is "dull" because all he can think or talk about is work.

Yet that is not what either saying actually means.

According to current neuroscience research... overworking or working long hours... makes your brain "dull" in the sense of being the opposite of "sharp."

Overwork... kills your creativity... and productivity as the brain resists and "switches off."

I have known for a long time that when I work in 90 minutes segments... then take a 15... 20 minute break... I am far more "productive" and "focused"... and remain fresh throughout the day... plus I switch from whatever I am working on to something completely different when I take a break.

And another "golden rule" I apply to myself... when on "ME" time... nothing and no one is "allowed" to disturb me... unless it is an absolute crisis and emergency.

Scientists studying brain scans recently discovered that moments of creativity take place when the mind is at rest rather than working on something.

And since creative approaches are so crucial to success... workaholics are working themselves out a job... and a LIFE!

Neuroscience research is finding that when we are idle... in leisure... our brains are most active.

The Default Mode Network lights up... which... like airport hubs... connects parts of our brain that do not typically communicate.

So a stray thought... a random memory... an image can combine in novel ways to produce novel ideas... and you are more "efficent" in "problem solving."

This is not to say that people who are "all work"... do not get things done... they do... and are great at checking off the "busywork boxes."

Yet when it comes to thinking of new approaches... creativity... "working smart and not hard"... as they say... workaholics are worse than useless.

I am sure you know men and women like this... always on a device... always go... go...go... piling is the hours being "busy"... and they are proud of the fact that they are stressed to the max and look down on anybody who is not similarly overworked.

As if it is some kind of "martyrdom"... this "self abuse."

Yet... how "productive" are they... when you look at the "hours worked"... and what "benefits" are gained for those long hours of business?

What about the "physical health"... and "mental happiness" index of their lifestyle?

What is the point of working and driving yourself into the ground... earning money... if you have NO TIME or HEALTH... to actually ENJOY the "benefits" of your labours.

A dead millionaire is one thing only... DEAD!

Of course... it is long been known to medical science that "stress from overwork" causes major health problems... and the business world has tended to treat that as an acceptable trade off.

A health risk is tolerable if long hours are necessary to achieve success.

And I will re literate my point... a dead millionaire is one thing only... DEAD!

What the current research is saying... that there is "no trade off"... you pay with losing your "health and happiness"... and kill "creativity"... and "productivity."

Plus you often "pay" for long hours in other ways... like losing your "relationships."

Long work hours do not make you more successful... instead... they make you sick... and worse.. they make your brain "dull"... in other words... mediocre and uncreative.

Unfortunately... the myth that work... needs to equal long hours to acquire "success"... has become so ingrained in many business and work place cultures... that it is going to take a lot of courage and effort to "change" this kind of "thinking"... even when neuroscience is proving that this current culture is "demonstrably false."

So my advice to you... is to summon the courage to relax... put "ME" time in your daily planner... and never compromise on your "ME" time.

Be brave enough to give your brain the "leisure time"... it needs to carry your ideas... your career... or your business to the next level.

Because it is not about the amount of hours spent working being "busy" doing things... it is about the "hours" being smartly "invested" in being "productive"... to create "solutions" that solve problems for others... which they "benefit" from... that CREATES YOUR SUCCESS!

Thank you and may you enjoy a Prosperous and Dynamic day!

Yours Sincerely
