Transforming Negative Self Talk Into Something Positive

By Ange Fonce

You talk to yourself!

Yes?

Yet in what way do you talk to yourself?

Because the way you explain setbacks, mistakes and disappointments to yourself can dramatically affect your outcomes and how you live your life!

Whether your thoughts are pessimistic or optimistic will affect the choices you make, actions you take and the quality of your relationships and life.

Pessimistic thoughts, are useful in high-risk situations where doing a second safety check might save your life, yet optimistic thoughts will generally serve you better.

When coming up against a stressful situation a pessimist's fight or flight response will be triggered more readily and stay switched on for longer than an optimistic person.

Like when opportunities present themselves a pessimistic person will generally avoid the risk and lose opportunities that would have benefitted them.

While an optimistic person will see the opportunities as they present themselves. Measure the risks and calculate if it is worthwhile or not and leap!

Explanatory styles can be altered, with attention and practice by asking yourself...

3 Yes Or No Questions

Around the situation:

1... Do I think I played a key part in causing it or was it mainly caused by outside forces?

Do you take things personal to you in a subjective way or view events in an objective way. Personalisation or not.

2... Do I think the situation and the feelings around it will remain the same or can things be changed over time?

Pessimists view negative events as permanent and positive events as temporary.

Optimists view negative events as temporary and positive events as permanent.

3... Do I think the experience is replicated right across my life or is it specific to just one part?

Pervasive or not?

An example of this kind of thinking and beliefs can be this...

On your drive to work, three sets of traffic lights turning to red as your approach them does not mean your whole day will be ruined!

Pessimistic people tend to very superstitious and believe that life, people and events are constantly conspiring against them and that becomes their story that they constantly tell themselves.

While optimistic people just take events as they are, deal with the situation and move on.

Would you like to know more on how to transform the nature of the way you think so you can transform your Life?

I would recommend this excellent book "Learned Optimism" by Martin Seligman.

Have you any thoughts or comments you would like to share with me on what I have written?

I would love to hear from you.

Thank you and may you enjoy a Loving, Caring, Prosperous and Dynamic day!

Yours Sincerely
