In the very near future most fast-serve... and mid-priced restaurants will have a tablet on the table... letting you order... and pay without ever speaking to a waiter... the "Human Being" will be removed from the process... this has already happened in the libraries in the city I live in... the only human being you see now is at the "information point"... and those who restock the shelves with the..."old school"... books... you can even sign out and return those... "old school"... books in digital form... with out even having contact with another... "Human Being!"
And your store... your store is likely to become not much more then showroom for an online seller if pointing... and clicking is cheaper... faster... and more satisfying than hunting down a salesperson... and dealing with a transaction.
Appointments now with Doctors... other professionals... like myself... can now be done online... and when was the last time you looked forward to waiting in line to talk to a bank teller... or a loan officer?
It used to be that the goal was to be perfect... like a computer... now of course even that is not good enough if you are in any job that can be done by a computer... or the ever increasing number of customers with an app in their hand... we talk about the Internet revolutionising the World... the mobile phone app has yet to hit full stride.
Once you acknowledge that the measurable... objective job you have can be taken by a cheap mass produced downloadable app... you have to understand... you have to make changes... that you are not just in competition with other human beings... you are in competition with mass produced... cheap... and efficient technology.
If you job is scripted... it means you can be replaced by a scripted app... and you will be... after all it is a lot more cost effective than you are.
It was the manufacturing sector that become... "robotised"... and how many tens of millions were replaced?
Now it is the service sector being... "digitized" ... by apps.
You are going to have to make yourself... "indispensable"... the service you provide is dramatically better than self-service... or else you job is gone... even possibly your business is gone.
If what you do is not special... do not bother.
And yet... what an opportunity!
Instead of seeing a your job as a shuttler of information... and stuff from place to place... you can acknowledge that in fact... the shuttling... and stuff is not unique... or even particularly valuable.
It is... The Human Being... part that is worth something... is uniquely valuable.
And those men... and women who understand that the best... "investment"... they can make is into themselves to become... "valuable humans"... skilled at all levels... will become... "indispensable!"
You cannot script... and make an app for... HUMANNESS!
The ability to CONNECT... and RELATE to other Human Beings is the BEST app of all.
