Only 56 Words To Tell A Story

By Ange Fonce

As you probably know by now if you have been reading my articles on persuasion and influence I empathise the point in being an effective story teller to get your point across.

A question that I get asked a lot is...

“How long or short does a story have to be to be impactful?”

To answer this question let me share with you a story using the example of a commercial I saw recently...

The commercial was a request to contribute to your local blood bank and it went something like this...

Video of a mum talking...

“We took my son to the Emergency Room when we thought something was wrong... we discovered that he had this condition which affected his heart... by the time he was 8 he had 107 blood transfusions.

Video of an 8 year old sitting in a rocking chair reading a book.

“Thank you to all of you who give blood... without your generosity my son would not be alive right now.”

Narrators voice...

“Give blood to your local blood bank.”

End of commercial.

That is about 56 words of dialogue not counting the narrators voice.

Effective and the story made its point... GIVING BLOOD saves lives!

The story is especially impactful if you are a parent because as parents we would do anything to protect our children.

Now... the commercial could have come out and listed all of the logical reasons and benefits as to why it makes sense to give blood...

How it helps your community

How it is the right thing to do

How important a service it provides

How it may help you or your loved ones some day

And the reality is that even though all of these logical reasons are great and true... they do not have nearly the impact that a simple story does about a mother and her son... using the EMOTIONAL connection to make the point!

So when you are wanting to persuade or influence someone to do something... instead of beating them over the head with logic and reason... try framing whatever you are asking into the EMOTIONAL context of a story

Include the emotions in the story telling as well.

And see what a difference telling a well constructed story makes when you are trying to get someone to take action

Instead of blinding them with reason and logic.

Because the simple fact is this... the vast majority of humans are emotional beings.

There are very few logical Mr Spocks and Datas walking around this planet.

Because let me ask you...

How often have you been motivated by logic to take action against the amount of times you have been motivated by powerful emotion to take action?

Thank you and may you enjoy a Prosperous and Dynamic day!

Yours Sincerely
