Do Your Think You Are Logical Or Emotional

Do you consider yourself a more logical person or a more emotional one? 

When I have talked to people and asked them this question... most of the responses that I get lean toward the logical answer. 

Not all of them of course are the majority. 

So you would think with all of the logical people around getting someone to see the logical side of your argument... your new widget... your suggestion or your advice would be easy... right? 

Wrong... as a matter of fact nothing could be further from the truth. 

Why? 

Because despite thinking of ourselves as the logical creatures that we are... we make a lot of our decisions based on emotions... desires... wants and needs

And I am not saying that there is anything wrong with that. 

The problem becomes how do you influence or persuade someone who says that they are logical when in fact you know that they are emotional

In order to do this you have to help someone overcome a certain amount of fear. 

Here are a couple listed in random order: 

1... Fear of trusting you.
 
2... Fear of making a mistake.
 
3... Fear of getting burned emotionally.
 
4... Fear of future regret.
 
5... Fear of what others will think. 

Again this is not a comprehensive list and these are some of things that you need to take into consideration when you are trying to communicate to someone to do something... and the better job you do at alleviating these fears... the more comfortable someone will be making a decision. 

And that is probably the crux of the communication

So the next time you are gearing up to ask a favor or make a suggestion or propose something... think about how you can eliminate some of these fears so that you make it comfortable for someone to make a decision. 

One simple thing that you can do is to "pull away" from the thing you are trying to influence or persuade someone to do. 

What I mean is that you could say something like this... 

"Look... in all honesty I have no idea if this advice will work for you or not because I am not sure of the type of person that you are... if you are the type of person who takes in a lot of ideas and then does not act on them... then you might be better off passing on this." 

Now the key is not to insult someone that you are speaking with and to have them qualify themselves so that they start doing some of the talking and you can be quiet and listen

Obviously this is not foolproof and if you begin to play with this idea I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how many people respond to this sort of questioning and feel comfortable with you so that they are more apt to listen to you and do what you say.
