Celebrating Your Flops And Failures

By
Ange Fonce

Lately... I have been "thinking" about... and doing research into failure.

Partly... that is because I just read something about what is called the... Survivor ship Bias... this is the idea that we all tend to look to the "winners" in any category... for cues we can copy... what we do not often do...  is look at the "failures"... and yet they can teach you plenty... as an example of this,...the book... "You Are Not So Smart”... gives this... Survivor ship Bias... example.

During World War II... a lot of new weaponry...  new tactics... and the multiple fronts of historys widest scale conflict... had the top brass at the Pentagon a bit overwhelmed... to help make sense of it all... they recruited not just soldiers... they recruited scientists... statisticians... and mathematicians... these men... and a few women would help them figure out things like better bomb trajectories... and how to tell when a big ship was about to turn... using wave patterns for better torpedo accuracy.

Another of the big puzzles was how to armour war planes... armour is heavy... so you cannot put it everywhere on a plane... so where best to put it?

The generals, who were... "not so smart"... according to the book... looked at planes after battle... and figured...

"Why not put the armour where the enemy likes to shoot most?"

This seemed logical according to the returning shot up planes... which was along the body... and in spots at the base of the tail... and wings.

Seems like a good idea... right?

Wrong actually

A maths whiz they recruited from Austria asked them the question they were not asking...

"Why look at planes that survived the battle?"

After all he reasoned it is clear they could get shot in those spots... and still fly... the trick is... he told them... to armour the spots that our planes CANNOT survive.

Look... he told them... at where the bullets were not on the returning planes... and then let us work out the "probability" that these spots might be getting hit on the planes that never came back... they did... and it helped save the lives of many pilots.

The Lesson For You?

Simple... it is great to look at the "methods that wins"... the "practices"... the "attitudes" and so on... also be sure now and again to revisit the "failures" that never worked.... if you can... look at a few together... one after the other.

The "patterns" you discover might be eye popping... they might also help arm your "brain" against making the same mistakes somewhere down the line.

I have always said that any "failure" you experience... you take it apart and learn what went wrong... that way every "failure" you "experience" is a... "learning step"... that eventually leads ultimately to your SUCCESS!

And as a footnote...

There have been many... many "discoveries" made in Science where the original research ... experiment "failed"... and instead of writing of the "failure"... the Scientist took apart the "failure" and "discovered" something "completely new."

As always... leave a man or woman all the "better" for "knowing" you.

Thank you and may you enjoy a Prosperous and Dynamic day!

Yours Sincerely
